On the 1st of November 2024, thousands of lawyers gathered at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown to launch the Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone, a body that stands parallel with the tenets of the Sierra Leone Bar Association.
The new group’s mission claims to advocate for the safeguarding of the rule of law, promoting the administration of justice, and supporting the professional development of legal professionals.
The inspiration to establish the Lawyers’ Society was drawn from the backlash born out of the Sierra Leone Bar Association’s Annual General Meeting held in Kenema on the 18th of May 2024.
The aggrieved lawyers claimed that the Kenema elections were not credible, stating that a group of individuals hijacked the process, disenfranchising many lawyers in the country.
However, the Executive elected in Kenema has since been representing the Bar Association in local and international conferences.
