The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Princess Dugba has announced that no fishing will take place in the seas of Sierra Leone for the whole of February 2025 to allow the fries to grow.
This decision came at the wake of scarcity of fishes in the domestic market.
Before now, Minister Dugba said one could see fishes all over the beaches. “But now, fishermen have to travel deep into the sea to catch fishes,” she said.
With dismay, she expressed fear over how some fishermen use mosquito nets to fish, destroying fries and eggs in the process. Some even use buttercup to sell these fishes in the market,” she told journalists, citing Ghana and Guinea that have once closed their waters to allow fries to grow.
During the off-season, she said they will provide an alternative means of livelihood and free medical services to the various fishing clubs.
She revealed that China has granted Sierra Leone the right to export fishes to their country, a big boost for the fishing sector.
